The Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory: Present Status and Future
نویسنده
چکیده
The Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HFUBF) is a first generation national user facility for nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics research with radioactive ion beams (RIBs). The reconfiguration, construction, and equipment-commissioning phases have been completed and the beam development program is in progress. In this article, descriptions of the facility and newly implemented experimental equipment for use in the nuclear and astrophysics programs will be given and an outline of the initial experimental program will be presented. Special targethon source related problems, endemic to the production of specific short-lived RIBS will be discussed. In addition, plans, which involve either a 200-MeV or a 1-GeV proton-linac driver for a second-generation ISOL facility, will be presented.

متن کاملFirst Direct Measurement of the 17 F ( p , γ ) 18 Ne Cross Section
The rate of the 17F(p,γ)18Ne reaction is of significant importance in astrophysical events like novae and x-ray bursts. The decay of 17F is thought to help drive the expansion of the nova envelope, and the 17F(p,γ)18Ne reaction affects the production of 18F, a target of gamma-ray astronomy, as well as being an important link in the (α ,p) reaction chain during the ignition phase of x-ray bursts...
متن کاملProduction of negatively charged radioactive ion beams
Beams of short-lived radioactive nuclei are needed for frontier experimental research in nuclear structure, reactions, and astrophysics. Negatively charged radioactive ion beams have unique advantages and allow for the use of a tandem accelerator for post-acceleration, which can provide the highest beamquality and continuously variable energies. Negative ion beams can be obtainedwith high inten...

متن کاملRadioactive Ion Beam Facilities in Europe: Current Status and Future Development
The production and acceleration of Radioactive Ion Beams (RIBs) is today an area of intense interest. The history and development of RIB facilities in Europe is presented, with discussion of both the “in-flight” and “ISOL” methods used at different laboratories. The current status of present developments like the SPIRAL II facility at GANIL and the FAIR in-flight facility at GSI are briefly rev...
